What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

A common sight is a small, beige box that is located under the pilot's seat in the majority of aircraft. The transponder is a tiny beige box used to transmit the SQUAWK code when air traffic control is activated on the aircraft. The transponder can be set to the 'ON,' ALT or SBY (standby position) positions.

Air traffic control will often instruct a pilot to "squawk the ident". This is an instruction for pilots to press their transponder's IDENT button. The ident button makes the aircraft blink on ATC radar screens, allowing them to easily identify your aircraft on the screen.

There are 63 discrete code blocks that can be assigned to an aircraft. However there are also reserved codes that prohibit the use of specific codes in areas of high traffic or in times of emergency. The discrete code blocks are set up by statistical analysis to reduce the chance that two aircrafts with identical SQUAWK codes will be in the same sector at any one time.

A transponder keys has a special chip inside that holds the ID code. If the security light in a vehicle is illuminated, it indicates that the ID code of the key doesn't match the one stored in the computer. The immobilizer on the car will be disabled and the car won't start without another key. PIN codes

A PIN code consists of a sequence of numbers (usually 4 or 6 digits), which are used to gain access to a device, service, or system. For example, a smart phone has a PIN code that the user sets when they first buy the device. They must enter it every time they want to use it. While a longer code may appear more secure, there are ways to hack or guess a PIN code that is as small as four digits. It is recommended that the PIN should be at least six digits long using a mix of letters and numbers, to give more security. Some OEMs also require PIN codes for key programmer to ensure security, to prevent non-authorized persons from stealing data from the modules.

VIN numbers can be used to identify cars and provide a wealth information about them. VIN numbers are unique for every vehicle on the planet and are not applicable to alien vehicles (or whatever). The 17 digits of a VIN code are a mixture of letters and numbers which can be decoded to reveal crucial information about your vehicle or truck.

A VIN number is comprised of various sections, each containing particular information.
